The Canvas

Every restoration starts with a blank canvas; the body shell. In our case, we have this four door wagon. These are the pictures the day that it arrived. Not much to look at.

Basically, it's a nice small wagon with a few neat features like the rear fold down tailgate and window lift hatch circa 1960's style. It has a nice curved body style before the era when Volvo went to a total box look. The engine originally was a bilge pump motor in ships (as I understand it), and is bulletproof. But it arrived barely running. So it would need a complete overhaul of the entire drivetrain to be a reliable daily driver. But it also puts out only about 1/3 of the power that we want for our modern version. It's gotta go. The body has a lot of "stuff" on it. It will all go the way of the junk pile. One of the first major parts of the project will be to convert this into a two door. You will find a separate section on that.

The front end is pretty ugly with a huge bumper. Of course the overall stance and the wheels will be some of the first things to be changed. The interior, below, has a nice layout to it. The rear seat folds down flat in the old wagon style and creates a large rear cargo area. This thing has "potential" written all over it.
